The
Misadventures

of an
Unlikely
Naturalist

At once laugh-out-loud funny and poignantly reflective, Charlie Bennett’s stories are essential reading for everyone who loves to settle down and savour tales of the British countryside…”

Tales of
country life

After quitting his recruitment business to farm full-time, Charlie Bennett re-discovered a deep connection to the natural world, journeying down a proverbial rabbit hole as he delved into the life of his farmland and its wild inhabitants. These stories are by turns funny and thought-provoking, combining gentle humour, reflection and insight into the struggles facing humankind and the countryside in existing side by side.

  • “This is essential reading for anyone who cares about the natural world and our place in it, an opportunity to share Charlie's pleasure in his reconnection to nature and his reflections on the place of humankind within it."

    Jane Pikett, editor

  • "This is the loveliest and most heartfelt tribute to the natural world I have read in a long time. It's a journey of rediscovery and reawakening, and is utterly serendipitous as we, the reader, journey with Charlie into the landscape and its wildlife. Truly magical."

    Lucy Trewhitt

  • "Everyone who cares for the countryside, and our place in it, should read this remarkable book. I felt myself walking the farm with him as he came across magical and serendipitous moments. This book is a joy."

    Simon Timperley

  • "Charlie's writing is marked for its honesty, its authenticity, and a charming, guileless nature which delights in every fall of leaf, every creak of ancient tree, every kaaw of his beloved rooks. I cannot recommend this book highly enough."

    Gary Ramsay

About Charlie

One day he was running his recruitment firm, the next, the world was in the grips of a pandemic and business came to a shuddering halt. So, Charlie Bennett did what many other people did – he went for a long walk in the country. Only, unlike most other people, he’s still there.

Deciding to take on the family farm full-time, successfully combining sustainable farming and wildlife in a groundbreaking biodiversity project, his semi-dormant connection to the countryside was fully reawakened. So much so, that he started writing about it, and the result is Down the Rabbit Hole; a serendipitous rediscovery of the natural world written with gentle humour, reflection and insight into nature and our place within it.
